After teeth whitening

Do not smoke for 48 hours. Avoid foods and beverages that stain. Mild sensitivity to hot or cold liquids may occur. This usually passes within 1-2 days. If sensitivity persists, we recommend taking over-the-counter pain medication.

After a gingival graft

Our team will give specific instructions regarding postoperative care, such as diet, physical activity, and medications. Do not floss or brush the gum line that was repaired until the area has healed. You will be asked to use a special mouth rinse to help control plaque during the healing process, and you may be put on an antibiotic to reduce the risk of infection.

Temporary crown or bridge

During your first appointment, one or more of your teeth was prepared for a crown or bridge. A temporary crown was fabricated for each prepared tooth. Temporary crowns are cemented with a temporary dental cement to allow for easy removal at your next appointment.

Final crown or bridge

It may take a few days for you to get used to your new restoration. You may experience some minor discomfort for the first few days following your treatment. An over-the-counter pain reliever/anti-inflammatory is recommended for patients who are able to tolerate them. If discomfort increases or lasts more than 2-3 days, please call us.

Take-home trays

For effective results: brush and floss teeth. Take the syringe out of the kit. Remove the cap and insert a tip by twisting it securely onto the syringe. Place a small drop of gel into every compartment of the tray for all the teeth undergoing treatment.

Scaling and root planing

Scaling and root planing is a non-surgical treatment for periodontal disease. The purpose of the treatment is to remove bacterial plaque and tartar from around the teeth and under the gum line, which is causing bone loss. The goal is to produce clean, healthy teeth and roots, which will promote healing of the inflammation and infection that causes gum disease.

Root canal treatment

The anesthesia will wear off 2 to 3 hours after the procedure. Avoid eating until the numbness in your mouth is gone. This will prevent you from biting your cheek or tongue. Do not chew or bite on the treated tooth until you have had it restored by your dentist.

Instructions for patients who will be receiving oral sedation

You must not drive a car or operate machinery for at least 18 hours. You may be drowsy for the remainder of the day and should be recovering at home in the care of a responsible adult until you are fully alert. Do not travel by public transit.

Partial and complete dentures

In the beginning, your new partial denture may feel awkward or bulky. This is normal, and you will eventually become accustomed to wearing it. Inserting and removing the partial denture will require some practice. Follow all instructions given by your dentist.

Care after minor oral surgery

Sometimes, after minor oral surgery, you may experience pain, bleeding and/or swelling. Proper care after oral surgery will help your mouth heal quickly and cleanly. Once the anesthetic (freezing) wears off, feeling some pain is normal. You might have the most pain in the first 24 to 48 hours after your surgery.
